STARTING A MATHS EXAM

Summary Planning which questions? Problem Solving Checking Equipment? Going Nowhere?

Here is how I advise you to start maths exams.

PLANNING WHICH QUESTIONS? - Read the paper
and note down the Special Questions you have revised - which special questions?

Now read the rest of the paper and you will find questions that you can do most or some of. DO NOT WORRY. Note down these questions.

You will have some questions left - think of those as bonus questions. Because you have revised properly the number of questions you have written down is enough to pass.

Time to start - then dash off your special questions making sure you are not careless by checking.

Special Questions

Because we get nervous in exams, we have revised a few special questions. We know them without thinking so we just do them first making sure we are not careless by checking. Back to planning the paper

If you have done your revision the biggest issue in maths (exams or not) is how to solve the problems when you get stuck.

PROBLEM SOLVING

CHECKING:- So far you have done your special questions and have had help with Problem Solving. These are the most important tips during an exam.

But the other important trick in an exam is good checking. This will always save you up to 10%.

Have you got all your equipment?

Plan this the night before - check that you have your equipment in the bag the night before the exam.

Check before you leave home.

You should have:- PEN
PENCIL
RULER
RUBBER
MATHS SET
CALCULATOR
Bribe?

GOING NOWHERE

Another thing that happens in a maths exam is that you find yourself going nowhere. Somewhere at the beginning of the question you make a careless mistake and your answer gets bigger and bigger and bigger and ..... Your numbers get more and more complicated.

The examiner is not going to ask questions like this, s/he is not going to make ridiculous numbers so ....
STOPCheck for your mistake but because you have been doing the question for so long you probably won't find it. This question is trying, very trying.

Give up. Leave it alone. Move on.

Come back to this question later when your mind has worked on other problems and forgotten this one. Half the time you will come back, find your mistake easily and dash off the question. If you can't don't worry - if you have done your revision properly you will be OK.
